Matthias Buhmann studierte an der Universität Konstanz Life-Science (Biologie und Chemie) und promovierte im Fachbereich Biologie über Bakterien- Mikroalgen-Interaktionen in Biofilmen.
In einem Protein-biochemischen Forschungsprojekt am ZIK-B CUBE der TU Dresden analysierte er Zuckerproteine von Mikroalgen, die das Anheften an Unterwasseroberflächen vermitteln. Am Schweizer Eidgenössischem Materialforschungsinstitut Empa arbeitete an antimikrobiellen Materialien, Biofilm-Modellsystemen und analysierte in einer klinischen Studie das Mikrobiom von Biofilm-Ablagerungen auf Medizinprodukten.
Seit 2019 arbeitet er an der Entwicklung, in Verkehrbringung und Vermarktung von Medizinprodukten und hat Expertise im Bereich  Reiniger, Desinfektionsmittel und Aufbereitung von Medizinprodukten aufgebaut.
